What a SPAB is and when California law requires one

A School Pupil Activity Bus — SPAB — is a bus certified by the California Highway Patrol to carry students on school-sponsored activity trips in a vehicle that is not a yellow school bus. If a K-12 school, district, athletic department or school-sanctioned program is moving students on a chartered bus, California requires that bus and its driver to be SPAB-certified.

In practice that covers essentially every school charter: field trips, athletic league games and playoff travel, band, orchestra and choir festivals, prom, graduation and grad night, outdoor education weeks, academic competitions and college-visit days. A yellow school bus and a SPAB are both legal for student transport — the difference is the vehicle. Districts choose SPAB motorcoaches and shuttles for reclining seats, under-floor luggage bays, climate control and, on the 56-passenger coach, an onboard restroom for long legs.

Non-school trips — a family reunion, a corporate offsite, a private tour — do not require SPAB. But if a school's name is on the trip, ask the carrier for its CHP paperwork before you sign, and make sure the phrase on the certificate is School Pupil Activity Bus.

Districts do not book a bus, they onboard a vendor — and the packet is usually what delays a trip, not availability. We keep ours assembled and return completed packets within one business day.

SPAB use cases

Athletics and league play

League games, tournaments and CIF playoff travel are the highest-volume SPAB work we do. Athletic directors get restroom-equipped 56-passenger coaches for long section legs, 37-passenger SPAB shuttles for weeknight games close to home, and under-floor bays that swallow pads, gear bags and coolers. Season-long schedules can be quoted as one block so the department isn't re-quoting every week.

Field trips

K-12 field trips to museums, science centers, state parks, the Capitol and marine-science sites run on SPAB units with reclining seats and luggage capacity. We walk the load point with the trip coordinator, confirm the destination's motorcoach drop and layover, and set a hard pickup time so the group isn't waiting at the curb.

Band and performing arts

Marching band, orchestra, choir and drama travel needs bay space as much as seat count. Instruments, uniform racks, percussion and props ride below deck; for large marching loads we'll assign an extra bay or a second unit rather than guess. Festival and adjudication schedules are built with the director's warm-up window in mind.

Prom and grad night

Prom and grad-night moves are staged drops with an off-site driver layover, because most hotels and venues cannot hold a coach curbside for four hours. We plan the return manifest with the school so every student who boarded leaves on the same bus, and drivers stay with the vehicle for the entire event window.

Outdoor education

Week-long outdoor-education programs are quoted as a package — Monday departure, Friday return — rather than hourly. Where camp access roads are too narrow or steep for a 45-foot coach we assign 23- or 37-passenger SPAB units, confirmed against the site's own vehicle restrictions before the trip.

College visits

Junior and senior college-visit days usually pair two campuses in one run — UC Berkeley and Stanford, UC Davis and Sacramento State, or a Peninsula-to-San Francisco loop. We time departures around campus tour check-ins and park in the visitor motorcoach areas each university designates.

SPAB pricing

SPAB trips are quoted hourly at $125–$250 per hour depending on vehicle size, day of week and trip length, with a typical 4–5 hour minimum. Multi-day outdoor-education weeks and overnight tournament travel are quoted as flat packages instead of hourly.

School purchase orders and net-30 billing are accepted [confirm with owner]. Booster clubs, PTAs and parent groups can be billed directly when the trip is not routed through district accounts payable.

SPAB frequently asked questions

Is a SPAB the same as a yellow school bus?

No. A yellow school bus is a Type 1 or Type 2 school bus used mainly for home-to-school routes. A School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) is a motorcoach or shuttle-style vehicle certified by the CHP to carry students on school-sponsored activity trips — reclining seats, luggage bays, and a restroom on the 56-passenger coach. Both are legal for student transport; SPAB is what districts use for field trips, athletics and long-distance travel.

Can parents and chaperones ride the bus?

Yes. Parents, coaches, chaperones and staff ride on SPAB trips alongside students. Seating is one passenger per seat position — there are no standees permitted on a SPAB under CVC 545, so every rider, adult or student, has to be counted in the seat total when you book.

Do you need a chaperone on a SPAB trip?

The driver is responsible for the vehicle, not for supervising students. Districts and schools set their own chaperone ratios, and virtually every district requires at least one adult chaperone per bus. Tell us your chaperone count at booking so the seat total is right.

How far ahead do districts book SPAB transportation?

Field trips typically book 3–6 weeks ahead, prom and grad night 60–90 days ahead, and outdoor-education weeks a full semester ahead. Athletics is the exception — league and playoff schedules move, and we hold reserve capacity for short-notice games.

Can you do same-day athletics trips?

Often, yes. Rescheduled games, weather calls and playoff bracket placements all create same-day needs, so we keep reserve SPAB units and on-call SPAB-certified drivers during the fall, winter and spring seasons. Call dispatch directly for same-day requests rather than using the form.

Do you serve private schools and charter schools?

Yes. Independent, parochial and charter schools book SPAB transportation on the same terms as public districts, including a certificate of insurance naming the school as additional insured and copies of our CHP inspection and driver SPAB certificates.

What documents will my district ask for?

Can students bring equipment and instruments?
